PA Exploring the Idea of Self-Driving Cars

The idea of highly automated vehicle technology, or self-driving cars, is currently being tested in Pittsburgh, and Pennsylvania could be at the forefront of this type of transportation, even though state laws never anticipated this advancement.

As a member of the House Transportation Committee, my colleagues and I joined with the Senate Transportation Committee on Tuesday (pictured above) to learn more about self-driving cars from an impressive panel of experts and professionals. The goal involves striking the proper balance between ensuring public safety while encouraging innovation.

Experts in the field have said that driverless cars can lead to greater safety, mobility, innovation and economic development. Several cars were also on display Tuesday.

SOPA Bocce Competition at the Capitol

Special Olympics Pennsylvania (SOPA) hosted its first-ever Unified Government Sports Challenge last week in the Capitol’s East Wing Rotunda. The event paired local organization leaders, government and legislative officials with SOPA athletes for a bocce competition. I was so glad to stop by this great event and play bocce, and meet with Sonya and Paul, who both represented Northumberland and Snyder counties.

Recognizing Sunbury’s Citizens of the Year

It was an honor to recognize Diane Miller and Connie Kistler, two dedicated citizens who were selected as this year’s Citizens of the Year by the Sunbury Rotary Club. Diane and Connie are co-founders of Parent to Parent Connections Inc., of Northumberland County, a grassroots group of parents of children with special needs. Thanks to both Diane and Connie for using their talents, energies and resources to serve others. They really exemplify the best qualities in a great neighbor, and their spirit of giving and dedication has greatly impacted the lives of others.

Legislation to Expand Discounted Vehicle Registration to More Retirees

The House this week approved a bill which would allow more retirees on fixed incomes to apply for discount vehicle registrations. PennDOT currently offers a vehicle registration discount of $10 to retirees who receive Social Security or other pension income that does not exceed $19,200 annually. Only one vehicle can be registered at the lower rate.

House Bill 188 would increase the income limit to $23,500, which is the same threshold as the state’s PACENET prescription drug assistance program. The income limit hasn’t been increased since 1998. The bill has been sent to the Senate. Click here to learn more about the existing program.

All cleanup activities will be during daylight hours from Monday, March 27, to Thursday, March 30. Motorists are asked to be alert and drive with caution when encountering PennDOT workers along area roadways.
