ELYSBURG – In an effort to help educate parents and members of the community about the latest drug concerns and prevention methods, Reps. Kurt A. Masser (R-Columbia/Montour/Northumberland) and Lynda Schlegel Culver (R-Northumberland/Snyder) will host a Drug and Alcohol Community and Parent Awareness Program on Thursday, May 4.

The program will take place at Our Lady of Lourdes Regional High School, located at 2001 Clinton Ave., in Coal Township. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., and the program will begin at 6 p.m.

PA Safe Schools and Health Student Partnership Project Co-Director Anne Katona-Linn and Masser will speak at the program. A question and answer panel will feature Northumberland County Coroner James Kelly, Mt. Carmel Police Chief Todd Owens, and Northumberland County Drug and Alcohol Director Glenda Bonetti. Coal Township Police will be present to explain the drug take-back boxes.

“Drug and alcohol abuse is a major problem that is unfortunately affecting individuals of many ages and backgrounds in our area,” Masser said. “Educating the community about the latest trends, risks and methods is a great first step in accomplishing a wide-spread awareness of the negative impacts drug and alcohol abuse can have on an individual.”

“The sad reality is that the current drug crisis stemming from opioid and heroin abuse continues to plague communities in our area, state and nation,” Culver said. “Awareness is one of the best steps we can take to recognizing the issues, and I encourage parents, students, caretakers, teachers and all members of the community to attend this program.”

A second Drug and Alcohol Community and Parent Awareness Program has been scheduled for Wednesday, May 17, at Line Mountain High School, located at 187 Line Mountain Road in Herndon.
