A package of Flood Relief and Flood Control legislation designed to help homeowners, businesses and local governments deal with the lingering financial effects of damages suffered last fall during Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee is moving through the state House. Rep. Lynda Schlegel Culver (R-Northumberland/Snyder) is the sponsor of a bill that would allow local municipalities to offer tax abatements to homeowners whose properties were severely damaged during those floods. A leaner state budget was called for by Governor Corbett on Tuesday as he presented his second annual budget address in Harrisburg. This year’s $27.1 billion state spending plan is actually a small reduction in total state spending, clamping down on government growth while calling for no new tax increases. Rep. Lynda Schlegel Culver (R-Northumberland, Snyder) said she believes that allowing local control over where funds are spent through the implementation of block grants will result in greater fiscal efficiency in the Commonwealth. Legislation banning the sale of “bath salts” and other synthetic look-alike drugs has been signed by Governor Corbett. Rep. Legislation to bring lawsuit abuse reforms to Pennsylvania’s courts similar to those already in place in more than 40 other states was approved Monday by the Pennsylvania House. House Bill 1, known as the Fair Share Act, would ensure financial responsibilities for damages in civil lawsuits are assigned in an equitable manner. Rep.
